PWT China tour 2018 5th and final stage
The fifth and final race of PWT China tour 2018 was run in the beautiful surroundings of Linqigu orienteering town in the Langfang region, south from Beijing. Organized in accordance with the China Open races, there were again several hundred runners enjoying orienteering. In the ladies class the winner of the day's special sprint was Lina Strand (SWE), and among the men it was Yannick Michiels (BEL) who beat the rest of the field.
The grounds of Linqigu orienteering town and it's last year opened PWT International Orienteering Park offered a charming surrounding for the race worthy to conclude this year's tour. Organized together with the China open races, there was a magnificent atmosphere in the arena with several hundred orienteers, huge screen and a big TV production for CCTV 5 – the biggest sports channel in China. The terrain itself was an outdoor park area, which was divided in to several different terrain types from open grass land and sandy forest to ”swedish” style cottage village and flower gardens. The courses had parts of very physical character but also as a counter-part, a section of ”labyrinth" orienteering with a 1:1500 map that took place among the cottages.

After a tough week of races, the winners in both classes were still able to pull off strong runs both physically and technically mastering both those faster parts as well as the more intense cottage section.

In the women's class it was familiar faces in the podium as Lina Strand (SWE) took her third victory of the tour. What a great week for her. The gap to the day’s runner-up Maija Sianoja (FIN) was 5 seconds. Karolin Ohlsson (SWE) became third 19 seconds behind Strand, which was enough to secure her the overall victory on the tour.

In the men's class it was a very very tight battle for the victory. Yannick Michiels (BEL) outperformed all the others and in the end it was only 0,5 seconds that separated him from the day's runner-up Emil Svensk (SWE). Matthias Reiner (AUS) also had a fantastic race and was just 10 seconds behind Michiels on third place. The day's win also earned Michiels the overall victory on the tour.

-Yannick Michiels, the men's winner today and also the overall winner of the tour commented his race: "After my disappointing race yesterday I wanted to finish the Beijing O Week with a good performance and I did it. Despite being in this area also last year the courses were completely different and especially in the cottage area it was quite difficult and I lost maybe ten seconds there. It was again a very tight victory as it was also in the first race. Overall, it was a really nice week with five completely different kinds of races.".

-"It was a great atmosphere here today with so many local runners, and a magnificent PWT tour altogether with all the races and cultural activities”, was the general feeling among the runners after the event.

After their race, the elite runners participated as special guests in the China Open races and shared some orienteering insights with the hundreds of orienteering enthusiastic youngsters and children. With warm hearts we follow the growth of orienteering in China.
